12th century silk dress – how I assemble my maunches :)

I promised to post photos how I assemble my maunches for my 12th century dress and to give you an idea which steps it takes to get from cutting out the parts (left side) to the finished maunch (right side) and here they are:

First I followed the tutorial of my sis Bella and made two “tubes” of fabric before cutting out the basic form… I just added a little bit width to the maunches… Then, because the outer silk fabric and the silk for the lining is slightly different I corrected small differences by cutting away of surplus fabric of both parts…

Wien-20120614-00447First I pinned the outer fabric and the lining together…

IMG-20120614-00448…then I sewed both parts together… Starting with a back stitch I do some running stitches… :) again and again and again… ;)

IMG-20120614-00450Next step… Pinned and now more sewing – the same like before, a small backstitch and a running stitch – again and again and again… well, I admit, I don’t trust running stitches enough therefore I use a back stitch from time to time :)

IMG-20120615-00451Next step – after sewing I “lay flat” the seam allowance – just make this stitches to keep the surplus fabric of the seam allowance close to the fabric to prevent it from flipping, twisting,…

IMG-20120616-00453…and many more stitches…

IMG-20120616-00454
IMG-20120616-00456…the inner seam is flat now :)

IMG-20120616-00457…and finally turned “inside out” :)

IMG-20120616-00458…btw. that’s all what you see of the stitches at the other side :)

IMG-20120616-00459…attaching the inner to the outer layer at the sleeve part with small running stitches :)

IMG-20120616-00460With long stitches I sew the middle seam of the outer fabric to the middle seam of the inner fabric – the back side of the maunches – to keep the lining in place when I move while wearing the dress…

IMG-20120616-00461Inside out of the stitches… Most of the long stitch is hidden between the fabric…

IMG-20120616-00462…I think holding the middle seem in place with the running stitch also helps to add more body to the curved parts of the maunches and to keep them in shape :)

IMG-20120616-00463…last step: with a running stitch round the front seam of the sleeve… :)

Wien-20120613-00443…btw. here the reason why I am doing this – left: the border is flat because of the running stitch, right: before the running stitch…

IMG-20120616-00465…both maunches finished – here one of them :)

  1. Ach, toll! Vielen Dank, Racaire! Diese Schritt-für-Schritt-Anleitungen sind super (und das wird ein schönes Gewand, das sieht man jetzt schon. Diese Seide… hach!) :-)
    Liebe Grüße von Claudia

  2. Dear Racaire
It is a lovely project and I have already seen the gorgeous embroidery you are doing on it (Facebook photos). Could you tell me please, what kind of metal thread are using for it? Many thanks
    Carol
