I got a helmet from Otti (our Marshall who organizes our SCA Fighter Practises here in Vienna) and that’s my first try of a helmet padding.
For the padding I used an old blanket (the same filling like for my padded cap/coif for fighting) – ca. 3 overlapping layers – I tried it on several times and added more padding where I thought it could be necessary – sewed every new piece and layer to the rest and tried it on again,… and again,…
That’s how far I got till now – wearing my fighting cap/coif the padding is very tight now – next step: covering it with linen and sewing the layers together with tight and decorative stitches…
I only worry because the padding seems to transfer every noise very loud to the ears – even with so much layers – maybe the quilting (sewing the layers tight together) will help to reduce it but I am not sure, … maybe I should add some leather between padding and helmet?
…the progress till now
Many thanks to Tristan and his blog “Taschen” (http://medievalpurses.blogspot.com) were I found this nice pattern (http://medievalpurses.blogspot.com/2008/06/pattern-redaction-part-1.html)
…btw. you can find a picture of the back here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/racaire/3953593797/
PS: Tristan points in his blog to a posting at the Medieval Silkwork blog – “Afwerking van een beursje – Finishing of a purse” – I think I will try this technique for this purse
PPS: Addition – I think I found the translation
-> Finishing the seams of 14th/15th century pouches
Yesterday I sent out a short summery of the photos I took and where to find them to some mailing lists that could be interested into the photos – here is this short summery also for you:

Yesterday I was at my 12th fighter practise- the first time with my own and selfmade sword…
…made with some help of a good friend – it feels great to fight with an own sword
…because I still have no own helmet I asked Otti, our Marshal, if he has a helmet left he could sell me and I got this helmet – now I have to make an inlay for the helmet…
