Finally my photos taken at the Kingdom Universtiy near Hamburg are online now:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/racaire/sets/72157622701301219/
Gunnhild and Volker, members of the shire Aventiure, tried their best to make my stay as comfortable & interesting as possible and we also managed to visit three museums
Kingdom University was very interesting and I think my class was a success because it was a lot of fun – hopefully the class will result in many new Klosterstich projects and I am very looking forward to see the results ![]()
Furthermore I am very happy to tell that the charter of the Dragon’s Needle Embroidery Guild was signed by Their Majesties Judith and Gerhardt and King Gerhardt sealed the charter with the front gem of the crown of Drachenwald ![]()
The second Guild Meeting was very interesting – Many thanks to Gunnhild, Eleanora, Katherina and Rakonczay for attending the Guild Meeting and I also want to thank the other ladies who attended the Guild Meeting but are no members by now. Just a short summary for everyone who is interested: We discussed the possibility of the Guild participating in the ‘Coronation Cloak for Frankmark’ project but we think that as long as no details are known a further discussion is more or less senseless. We had a great idea for a new challenge concerning a new wall decoration for events – you will get to know more as soon as I worked out thedetails ![]()
To bad that I only managed to visit two classes and missed the class of lady Himiltrude – hopefully I will be able to visit the next University event and to attend more classes.
The Pelican ceremony was very interesting – btw: Congratulations to the new Pelican Master Robert of Canterbury!
The most funny part of the event, besides my class, was the dancing after the feast (Master Giano and the kitchen crew did a great job!) – Queen Judiths 15th century dances made me really breathless
Many thanks to everyone who made this event possible!
Ok, I am back home in good old Vienna again and my boyfriend and Cleo (my cat) still recognize me
…and I brought many Fotos with me, the Dragon’s Needle Embroidery Guild Charter was signed, sealed and followed me back home & I suppose my “Klosterstich” class was a success – and yes, it was a great event and Gunnhild & Volker from the shire Aventiure took care of me and I enjoyed staying with them near Hamburg very much…
More pictures and information will follow soon…
…today I will fly to Hamburg and this weekend I will attend the (SCA) University in Germany (near Hamburg) this time hosted by the (SCA) shire Two Seas – I am very looking forward to see some of my friends from Germany, Finnland, Sweden, England, … again ![]()
I am very looking forward to attend the dance, illumination, ‘Burgundian Woven Necklace’,… classes and to hold my own Klosterstich class and Guild meeting
…ok, I will be in Hamburg until the 17th of November and therefore not available via eMail
SCA – University in Germany – I am coming!!!
Flight to Hamburg booked and reservation for a bed at University approved

…and now also the pictures of Lord Raphe Cuthbert are online:
…and also Margaret de Mey from Chateau du Ciel has her photos online:
Margaret de Mey was also so kind and allowed me to use her pictures – therefore for everyone who wanted to see my new dress “in action” – here we go:
…next time I will try to adjust and fix my veil better
…ok, I soon will be on my way to the airport (Vienna – Munich, Munich – London /flight HG8389,…) and I am very looking forward to meet Melisende and her husband (who offered me a place to sleep before and after the event – thank you both sooooo very much for this offer) – I am sure I will have a great week in England.
I also take my wallhanging and the roundels for the A&S/Guild display
I hope to see some of you there and I am prepared to take many pictures during the next days
…after my posting concerning the first progress for my new dress I have again some progress to show from the last weekend
The sleeves already got their lining and I attached them to the main part of the dress – at the first photos at the top you can see this progress very good – I decided to take a red fabric for the lining to get a recognizable difference to the fabric used for the rest of the dress and I think the difference looks interesting and also makes the dress more interesting
…at this photo I tried to gather the fabric at the waist to give you an imagination of the effect I want to achieve for this part of the dress.
At the moment I am not sure how I will be able to solve the problem of adjustment – I really want to be sure how much fabric I really have to cut off before I cut it off.
I think I will call Livia from my shire and ask her and her husband for some help concerning this part of construction because I think I wont be able to solve the adjustment only by myself and my own two hands…
I am sure that some of you want to know how I will solve the gathering at the sides – at this point again many thanks to Lady Kareina Talvi Tytär from Tasmania for all her kind help!
I think I will sew a cord to the edge “with gaps in between for the lacing cord to slip through” rather than making a lot of small round ‘buttonholes’ – but at the moment I am not sure if I also will sew a cord to the edge and than add a second cord with the mentioned gaps or I only add the cord with the gaps directly to the edge – I have still to think this two possibilities over…
…but I definitely think that the effect will be better and it is also equates more what I can see at the picture with the gathering and lacing at the left from the 12th century – I think I will try one of this ideas
…btw. many thanks to Alissenda for sharing this great photo!
…and last but not least – a small detail photo concerning my work at the edge of the sleeves – I wanted to join both layers of fabric (I like clear edges rather than the ’rounder’ edge before I sewed them together) and therefore I decided to make some surface couching to also add something interesting to the sleeve…
…at the moment: still only handsewing – I still hope that I manage to finish the dress before my flight to London…
…and here all designs at one picture – it’s to late today for a photo with daylight therefore to give you a better picture of the effect of the colors and the silk – one picture taken with flash (see the photo at the bottom) and one without (photo at the top)
Some of you maybe know that I also take part at the A&S50 competition and therefore here a summery how I want to participate in this great sca-world-wide challenge:
1) A&S50 – Wardrobe (broad)
I decided that I definitely have not enough garb for a longer event (and I really would love to attend an event like Nibelungen or Doublewars or another War…) and I also wish to do some more “period” looking garb therefore – traaatraaaa – my first project for my wardrobe:
1.1) my blue 12th century dress (I hope I will be able to finish this dress before Coronation because I want to wear it during Fiona’s Coronation ceremony
2) A&S50 – Kingdom (broad)
I want to do also something for my kingdom – therefore I decided to do 50 things to support my kingdom and with the request for help concerning the embroidery for her dress my good friend Fiona helps me to start my A&S50 projects with at least 7 embroidered designs for her Coronation Dress ![]()
update 23.05.08:
2.1-2.7) 7 Designs in surface couching for Fionas coronation dress
update 10.05.08:
3) A&S50 – Stitches/Techniques (in-depth)
…and also something I forgot but I wanted to do for a long time: execute and (if not already learned) learn 50 kind of embroidery, needlework or sewing stitches ![]()
3.1) surface couching (embroidery technique – for Fiona’s coronation dress, for Anya’s Laurel cloak)
3.2) back stitch (sewing stitch – I use the back stitch instead for the running stitch for the sewing technique like described in the book “The Development Of Costume” by Naomi Tarrant on page 15 – 3rd row, picture in the middle – I feel much more secure and comfortable with the backstitch than with the running stitch)
3.3) Klosterstich
(“self couching technique” – I use it for my wallhanging project)
3.4) ‘diapered‘ work (also a kind of couching technique in my opinion – used for Anya’s Laurel cloak)
…and now the first progress for her dress – I only have to admit that I think that I already worked the first part with to much tension – I am very sorry and will try to get better with the next piece but I hope she will nevertheless like it
<- back
Here the text of the eMail I recently sent to the 12th century Mailing Group because I need a good and period looking dress for coronation – maybe some of you have also a good idea for me
– therefore:
My dear ladies and lords,
I would need some help concerning a new dress I would like to make – this is the fabric I would love to use: http://racaire.blogspot.com/2007/02/shopping.html (the blue fabric in the picture at the bottom on the left) and I would love to make a 12th century dress with long hanging sleeves (maybe with a decoration – I think about a decorating band in an other color at the upper arm) and with a gathered body part with side lacing and a key-hole neck in the same fabric like the decoration band and maybe the inner side of the sleeves also lined in this fabric of the color of the decorating band and keyhole neck decoration.
and here my questions:
1) what do you think about the fabric?
2) sleeves: would you change the direction of the fabric with the decorating band?
3) how much would you add for the body part to get a nice looking gathering?
4) what about the back part of the dress – was the dress at the back as long as on the front side? or would a “train” be appropriate for this period?
…any other hints or suggestions about something I haven’t thought at?
Sorry for my questions but because I mainly concentrate into embroidery (and there from one focus to the other) I am not sure about costuming and I have to many pictures of clothes of to many time periods on my mind and therefore I am very confused when I try to concentrated into a special time or period – but I am doing my best to become better and I think it would be great to start with 12th century and to please my good friend Lady Fiona with my new dress who is going to become our next queen at coronation this summer
Many thanks in advance for every help you provide
Best regards from Vienna
Racaire
Many thanks to Katheryn for this message at the Drachenwald Mailing-list:
…and I will be at coronation
– I am very looking forward to see Fiona again (and now I am sure she will be there
Before I go to bed – a short update:
I booked my flight to London about one hour ago… – hope to see some of you there too – more news soon
…it seems that I inspired at least one lady of my Klosterstich class to finish her sample
very lovely work
