Last saturday some friends and I visited the “Schallaburg” and the current exhibition “The Sixties. Beatles, Pill and Revolt” (from 1 Mai until 1 November 2010)
-> Wikipedia information in English (rather short)
-> Wikipedia Information in Deutsch (German, more info)
It was not allowed to take photos of the “The Sixties. Beatles, Pill and Revolt” exhibition but I took some photos of the beautiful castle and any item I found of the long time exhibition…
I took quite many photos of the castle, during our boat trip on the danube through the “Wachau” region and finally some photos during our walk through Krems but still haven’t managed to take a look through all photos and to sort some of them out for my Flickr account – but soon I will do it and than I will upload them to my Flickr account (as usual)…
This 4 photos are just a small preview of the photos I took and which I will upload to my Flickr account – photo 1 & 2 were taken at the Schallaburg, photo 3 during the boat trip and photo 4, showing this beautiful fresco, is just a small preview of a beautiful house in Krems… We also visited the “Karikaturenmuseum” in Krems, but it was not allowed to take photos there…
My friends refused to visit the city museum in Krems and I wished I have had more time to visit the old part of this town – therefore I think that I will visit this town again and take much more photos…
….more photos will follwo soon

Machteld posted about a lovely piece of 14th century whitework – really very lovely:
“… They have a lovely piece of 14th century whitework on display …”
…no vacation without at least the visit of one museum – if possible – and this time we visited two museums in Santorin/Fira:
The visit of the “Archaeological Museum” was rather disappointing – no aircondition, few interesting things on display and I wasn’t allowed to take photos of most of the items therefore I refused to take photos of the rest – most of them were similar to the items on display at the “Museum of Prehistoric Thira” and I was allowed to take photos of all items on display there – funny side note: while taking photos I wanted to take a pic of my boyfriend and the staff told me that it’s not allowed to take portrait photos of other people in the rooms of the museum… *lol* ?!? *lol*
You can find all my photos here: Greece, Santorin – Museum of Prehistoric Thira – June 2010
…and here my favourite photos taken at this museum:
Finally I managed to have a look through the last photos taken at the “Kunsthistorisches Museum” on the last day of Kareinas stay here in Vienna.
I uploaded the best (704) photos – btw. you can find all (old & new) photos taken at the “Kunsthistorisches Museum” – in this Flickr folder: Austria, Vienna – KHM / Kunsthistorisches Museum.
…and here a really rather small selection of the photos taken at the “Kunsthistorisches Museum”:
Again I would like to remind you on my posting SCA visit – Kareina – 1.966 photos in 2 days!!!
“…This weekend we managed to visit the Schatzkammer (treasury), the museums located at the “Neue Burg” (Ephesos Museum, Collection of Arms and Armour and the Collection of Ancient Musical Instruments) and also the Kunsthistorisches Museum.…”
Today I uploaded the last photos taken at the “Neue Burg” on Saturday – some additional photos taken at the “Collection of Arms and Armour”, some photos taken at the Collection of Ancient Musical Instruments, and last but not least photos taken at the Ephesos Museum.
You can find my Flickr Folders with the (new and also some old) museum photos here:
-> Treasury / Schatzkammer
-> Collection of Arms and Armour
-> Collection of Ancient Musical Instruments
-> Ephesos Museum
Let’s start with a small selection of the additional photos of the “Collection of Arms and Armour”:
Kareina proudly presents the – in her opinion – most interesting part of the whole collection
…and some photos taken at the Collection of Ancient Musical Instruments:
…and finally some photos taken at the Ephesos Museum:
Maybe some of you remember my posting SCA visit – Kareina – 1.966 photos in 2 days!!!
“…This weekend we managed to visit the Schatzkammer (treasury), the museums located at the “Neue Burg” (Ephesos Museum, Collection of Arms and Armour and the Collection of Ancient Musical Instruments) and also the Kunsthistorisches Museum.…”
I already posted a small selection of the photos taken at the treasury here: SCA visit – Kareina – 2nd weekend – photos Saturday – “Treasury” – my complete ‘treasury’ collection at Flickr: Austria, Vienna – Treasury / Schatzkammer.
After the treasury we also visited the museums located at the “Neue Burg” – here a small selection of the photos taken at the “Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer” / “Collection of Arms and Armour” – you can find all photos taken at the “Collection of Arms and Armour” here: Austria, Vienna – KHM – Neue Burg – Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer.
Part II – other lovely items:
I was very happy to find some lovely items, which were on display at the “Karl der Kühne” / “Charles the Bold” exhibition, back home – especially because it was not allowed to take photos at the “Karl der Kühne” exhibition – therefore I took about double as many photos as I normally would have…
“Jagdtasche, Süddeutsch, um 1430″ / Jagd=hunt , Tasche=bag, south Germany, about 1430 – btw. you can see one of the detail photos on top of this posting.
…here some of the lovely details of this bag:
“Prunksattel, Süddeutsch, um 1455″ / Prunk=parade/splendour, Sattel=saddle, south Germany, about 1455.
“Prunksattel, Südostdeutsch 1438-1439″ / Prunk=parade/splendour, Sattel=saddle, south east Germany, 1438-1439.
…and I love dragons
“Gürteltasche, Süddeutsch, um 1550″ / Gürtel=belt/girdle, Tasche=bag, south Germany, about 1550.
“Federspiel, Süddeutsch, um 1550″ / Feder=feather, Spiel=game, south Germany, about 1550.

Part I – armour:
Really, I managed to take 1.966 photos in just 2 days and I was very amazed when my dslr told me – at the very last room which we visited at the KHM Museum – that my 4GB card is full…
This weekend we managed to visit the Schatzkammer (treasury), the museums located at the “Neue Burg” (Ephesos Museum, Collection of Arms and Armour and the Collection of Ancient Musical Instruments) and also the Kunsthistorisches Museum.
During the next days I will upload a selection of the best pictures and point you to my favourite items ![]()
…1.966 photos – I still can’t believe it… *lol*
On Sunday we managed to visit following museums/exhibitions: “Wien Museum Karlsplatz”, “Römermuseum” & “Neidhart Fresken” – they all belong to the “Wien Museum”. The Wien Museum offers free entry for all visitors at every first Sunday of the month. ![]()
…btw. you can find all my old and new photos taken at the “Wien Museum Karlsplatz” at my Flickr account: “Austria, Vienna – Wien Museum” .
Ok, let’s start with the photos taken at the “Wien Museum Karlsplatz” – here another possibility to have a nice view over Vienna

…and after the Wien Museum we had a short break and lunch at the “Resselpark” next to the museum and also to the “Karlskirche”:

…and Kareina was very kind and showed me again how the Nailbinding techniques work, which she uses for her hood – I think it’s the Finnish one…:
We enjoyed the beautiful colors of the flowers…

…and then we visited the “Römermuseum” – btw. you can find all my old and new photos taken at this museum here:
Austria, Vienna – Wien Museum – Roman times – Römermuseum – 1010 Wien, Hoher Markt 3
…and they had also following things on display – found in a filling of a ‘latrine’ from about the 1st half of the 16th century – a small room with small changing exhibitions at the top floor of this museum:
Finally we visited also the “Neidhart Fresken” – btw. you can find all my old and new photos taken at this museum here:

Many thanks to Kathy, who pointed me in her posting "The Treasury of Basel Cathedral" to the book
The Treasury of Basel Cathedral (Metropolitan Museum of Art)
and I couldn’t resist to order a copy of it – please check out Kathy’s posting and have a look at the pictures of the lovely boxes inside the book. You can also find photos of illuminated pages, "spouted jugs" from the 14th century, woven fragments (early 14th century persia or Central Asia, 8th century Syria or Egypt, 8th-9th century Persia), "bracelet" (raised and gilded silver, coral and amber) from about 1500, "two plaques and a chain from a pectoral cross" from maybe Scandinavia – 1350-1400, two beautiful pendant crosses (1. Upper Rhineland, probably Basel, 1380-1400, raised, cast, engraved, and gilded silver, with seed pearls and 2. Germany, 15th century, mother-of-pearl, with gilded-silver mount and suspension loop), "Covered Beaker of Ulrich zem Luft-Eberler" from 1470-90,…

…and if you are interested into sculptures from the medieval period, you maybe would like to get a copy of one of the following booklets:
Bildwerke des Mittelalters
A5 size, 68 pages – "Bildhefte des Kunstmuseums Düsseldorf", Düsseldorf 1966 – b/w pictures of medieval sculptures
the pictures start with "1. Kruzifix, Bodenseegebiet" about 1100, "2. Muttergottes, Köln" about 1360, "3a. Reliquienbüste, Böhmen" about 1370-1380 … and end with "33. Hl. Maria Magdalena, Antwerpen" about 1490-1500, "34. Pilatus und spottender Jude, Südliche Niederlande (Brüssel?)" about 1510 and finally "35. Hl. Veronika und ein Krieger, Antwerpen" about 1520-1530.
Especially I would like to point out "15. Wurzel Jesse, Schaben" about 1530 – you can find this theme also in embroidered wallhangings, for example: "Wurzel Jesse-Teppich" (Kloster Lüne, 1503-1505) – you can find a good b/w picture in the book Per manus sororum…: Niedersächsische Bildstickereien im Klosterstich (1300-1583) (page 354) – btw. that’s still my favourite book about Klosterstich – the best overview of Klosterstich embroidery and if you can read German, a great source of information too
Farbige Bildwerke des Mittelalters im Rheinland
…bigger than A5 but smaller than A4 – 40 pages, 16 color pictures – "Farbige Bildwerke des Mittelalters im Rheinland" – Kunst und Altertum am Rhein, Führer des Rheinischen Landesmuseums in Bonn – for example you can find pictures of following sculptures in this booklet:
1) "Kopf des Kruzifixes", Frauenberg,… Köln, about 1160…
2) "Kruzifixus auf altem Kreuz", Güsten …Lothringen/Trier(?), beginning of the 13th century…
3) "Kruzifixus", Köln, St. Georg… about 1400…
4) "Stehende Muttergottes", Ollesheim bei Nörvenich… Köln, end of the 13th century…
5) "Thronende Muttergottes", Köln… beginning of the 14th century…
6) "Hl. Nikolaus", Köln… before 1350
7) "Stehende Muttergottes mit schreibenden Christuskind", Iversheim… Köln, about 1420-30…
…
Another nice addition for my bookshelf:
Die Welt des Codex Manesse.
Ein Blick ins Mittelalter
This book is a catalogue which accompanied the exhibition (12th June – 2nd October 1988) of the ‘Universitätsbibliothek Heidelberg’ about the Codex Manesse – a manuscript written at the beginning of the 14th century in Zürich (Zurich / Switzerland). It consists of ca. 688 pages – written in German language – and contains many interesting articles like:
A Schicksale der Handschrift (p. 1)
B Die Rückführung (p. 22)
C Bilder und Sachen (p. 68)
D Melodien und Instrumente (p. 113)
E Wappen und Stand (p. 127)
F Die Rezeption der Bilder (p. 153)
G Überlieferungsformen mittelhochdeutscher Lyrik (p. 224)
H Bildmotive – Vorbilder und Parallelen (p. 275)
J Das stilistische Umfeld der Miniaturen (p. 302)
K Falkenjagd – Falkensymbolik (p. 350)
…
The book also contains many beautiful pictures – besides the lovely illumination pics, I could also find 3 very interesting pictures:
page 490 – Haarnetz (hairnet) / Düsseldorf, Kunstmuseum / 1st half 14th century / silk, 33cm diameter 38 armorial bearings
page 491 – Haarnetz / Düsseldorf, Kunstmuseum / 2nd half 14th century / silk, 26cm diameter
page 523 – Almosenbeutel (alms pouch) with armorial bearings / Zürich, Schweizerisches Landesmuseum
…and there is also a nice pic of a wooden ‘Tric-Trac-Brett und Spielsteine’ on page 492 / after 1278, Augustiner-Eremiten-Kloster Freiburg / Landesdenkmalamt Baden-Württemberg, Außenstelle Freiburg
…great that this book is available at Amazon for a rather cheap price…
Love it! …and now I really need an additional bookshelf! *lol*
…a good reason to visit the Dommuseum here in Vienna:
“Kroatien – Wiege europäischer Kultur
Unfortunately it’s not allowed to take photos at the Dommuseum.
Today Elsa (a SCA member from Germany), Anna (a friend of mine) and I visited the Intarsia exhibition on display at the “Österr. Museum für Volkskunde / Wien” – btw. tomorrow is the last day of this special exhibition on display here in Vienna…
And a very nice lady of the museum allowed me to take pictues of this lovely embroidered Woollen Tapestry and I took many many photos – you can find them >uploaded to my Flickr account < …
On my way through the town I saw a very intersting advertisement for a exhibition on display at the ‘Österreichische Nationalbibliothek‘ here in Vienna (link to the page with text about the exhibition – sorry, only in German) – the exhibitons at the ÖNB are not very big but the items on display are rather interesting and normally the catalogues accompanying the exhibition are really great – I am very looking forward to visit this exhibition and to have a look inside the catalogue
