Last saturday some friends and I visited the “Schallaburg” and the current exhibition “The Sixties. Beatles, Pill and Revolt” (from 1 Mai until 1 November 2010)
-> Wikipedia information in English (rather short)
-> Wikipedia Information in Deutsch (German, more info)
It was not allowed to take photos of the “The Sixties. Beatles, Pill and Revolt” exhibition but I took some photos of the beautiful castle and any item I found of the long time exhibition…
I took quite many photos of the castle, during our boat trip on the danube through the “Wachau” region and finally some photos during our walk through Krems but still haven’t managed to take a look through all photos and to sort some of them out for my Flickr account – but soon I will do it and than I will upload them to my Flickr account (as usual)…
This 4 photos are just a small preview of the photos I took and which I will upload to my Flickr account – photo 1 & 2 were taken at the Schallaburg, photo 3 during the boat trip and photo 4, showing this beautiful fresco, is just a small preview of a beautiful house in Krems… We also visited the “Karikaturenmuseum” in Krems, but it was not allowed to take photos there…
My friends refused to visit the city museum in Krems and I wished I have had more time to visit the old part of this town – therefore I think that I will visit this town again and take much more photos…
….more photos will follwo soon

Recently I saw a very nice orange/yellow light shining at the house on the other side of the street which really surprised me…
I got up from my couch and took a look outside the window and saw a beautiful rainbow at the left side and a rather strange and interesting sky on the right side … I haven’t seen this till now and decided to take some pictures and share them with you
I love this kind of colorful sky and wish it would happen more often – the colors of the rainbow as well as the blue sky shining through the holes of the nice colored clouds… even the dark sky with its interesting range of colors is quite interesting
I couldn’t resist – just because she is such a cute cat…
…and I also wanted to bring you some photos of the sunrise and I managed to get up at 5 am in the moring – that was really hard for me because I am more like a night owl and getting up in the morning is rather hard for me… – but it was the morning of our last day – quasi this morning or possibly never again…
…ok, I have to admit that I told Philipp to wake me up at 5 am… *lol*
…btw. you can find all photos taken in Santorin which I uploaded till now here: 2010 Greece Santorin – June 2010
…ok, this are my last photos taken at Santorin – I hope you enjoyed them
After the lighthouse (Fáros) / Kap Akrotiri we also visited Perissa for a cold drink and a short break, but we didn’t take any photos there… we were very happy that we had decided to stay in Kamari and not in Perissa because Perissa appeared more hectically and noisy to us than Kamari and its nice seafront…
The day before our (hotel room) neighbour suggested that we could visit the winery Santos – on the way between Perissa and Kamari – if we would like to see a nice sundown and try some of the famous wines from Santorin and we decided to follow his tip

After visiting Thira/Fira and also Oia/Ja we decided to visit the lighthouse (Fáros) at the Kap Akrotiri on the next day
…btw. you can find all photos taken in Santorin which I uploaded till now here: 2010 Greece Santorin – June 2010
Here some photos taken at a small viewpoint on the way to the lighthouse:

After Thira/Fira we also visited the town Oia/Ja – here some of my favourite photos

It took me some days to read my eMails, unpack my luggage, … but today I managed to sort out more of my photos and to upload the first part of my Santorin photos besides the photos taken at the prehistoric museum – btw. I hope you enjoyed my museum photos
We stayed at the “Hotel Sigalas” in Kamari and had a very nice room including balcony and sea view, the shingle beach starting right in front of our balcony… therefore we decided to stay most of our time at our balcony – underneath the awning – it was quite comfortable and better for me because I easily get a sunburn or a sunstroke…
…and my boyfriend enjoyed the landing planes very much – our hotel was the last one at the beach and situated at the entry lane of the airport of Santorin – we are fans of the airpower event (every two years in Austria – Zeltweg) and had no problem at all with the ‘noise’ of the landing planes
After the first two evenings we also discovered a nice tavern at the seafront – Saliveros – a greek style tavern with very good food for reasonable prices
I uploaded some photos taken at our hotel and the beach in front of the hotel, some photos taken in Kamari… and – we also rented a car for three days – we took also some photos while visiting Fira/Thira and also some photos in Oia/Ja and at the Kap Akrotiri and from the terrace of the Santos winery (all photos besides them of taken in Fira/Thira will follow in the next photo parts)

…no vacation without at least the visit of one museum – if possible – and this time we visited two museums in Santorin/Fira:
The visit of the “Archaeological Museum” was rather disappointing – no aircondition, few interesting things on display and I wasn’t allowed to take photos of most of the items therefore I refused to take photos of the rest – most of them were similar to the items on display at the “Museum of Prehistoric Thira” and I was allowed to take photos of all items on display there – funny side note: while taking photos I wanted to take a pic of my boyfriend and the staff told me that it’s not allowed to take portrait photos of other people in the rooms of the museum… *lol* ?!? *lol*
You can find all my photos here: Greece, Santorin – Museum of Prehistoric Thira – June 2010
…and here my favourite photos taken at this museum:
Santorin was great – I am back home again and brought about 2500 photos with me – therefore it will take some time to upload the best ones
…and no embroidery during the last week (too busy with taking photos
btw. you can see one of my favourite photos so far… more pics will follow soon
My boyfriend invited me to join him for a holiday in Greece and I really couldn’t resist
…this summer we will explore Santorin – hopefully the volcano there will continue its sleep while we visit Santorin
Good bye for one week – I hope you enjoy reading my postings of the last days and also the following photos taken at our last holidays in Greece – Kos/2009 & Kreta/2007, Kreta/2005:

Kiriel also checked the information given by the museum and provides following info for us:
“Looking at the museum notes which I photographed at the time, unfortunately it says only “objets provenant du chateau de monsalvan“. The other objects in the case date from the 1490s to the 1550s. Sorry… that is all I have.”
Kiriel, thank you very much for sharing this great photo!
In my opinion “Long Arm Cross Stitch” won!
Ok, having a very close look at this photo for several minutes, comparing the structure and how the several lines of embroidery look like with the photos and information provided from the West Kingdom Needleworkers Guild concerning the ‘Long Arm Cross Stitch’ (http://wkneedle.bayrose.org/Articles/cross_stitch.html) and having a look at the damaged parts – see the b/w photo “Close-up showing stitch density and varying directions.” – I think “Long Arm Cross Stitch” could be the winner concerning the embroidery technique.
Btw. you can find a very good description of this technique at the West Kingdom Needleworkers Guild: http://wkneedle.bayrose.org/Articles/cross_stitch_patterns.html
Many thanks to the West Kingdom Needleworkers Guild! …and to Machteld for posting this links at her last posting
…btw. she has a very nice food blog: “The Papillon Pantry” http://thepapillonpantry.blogspot.com/
…and last but not least two useful links to groups at Flickr:
- Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance Jewelry http://www.flickr.com/groups/787432@N22/
- Textile History http://www.flickr.com/groups/textilehistory/
Kiriel, you rock!!!!!
Addition to my posting “Kiriel’s amazing “Textiles” folder on flickr! – addition: guess the embroidery stitches” concerning the third possible stitch:
I finally looked up the name for this stitch my book from the Bavarian National Museum gives me:
“Stielstich jeweils in zwei Reihen diagonal gegeneinander gesetzt, so daß die Wirkung der des Kettstiches gleichkommt”
-> I would translate it with: stem stitch worked in two rows diagonally put against each other, achieving an effect of chain stitch
see Meisterwerke mittelalterlicher Textilkunst aus dem Bayerischen Nationalmuseum – Antependium “Die Anbetung der Hl. Drei Könige” – page 54+
…and here the part of the posting I am referring too, to give you a fast overview of what I mean:
The Stitch used for an embroidery on display at the ‘Bayrisches Nationalmuseum’ – worked similar like a Satin Stitch – one row worked in one direction, the next one mirrored – this stitch looks very similar to chain stitch
…btw. I attended two embroidery workshops at the bawarian national museum and the lady who hold the workshop pointed out that it definitly isn’t worked in chain stitch and I really can support it – yeah, authors of embroidery books can make mistakes and that’s one…
…and here the photos of this embroidery, including a detail photo:
…it – the blue embroidery – really looks like chain stitch, doesn’t it? …but it isn’t chain stitch!![]()
…btw. Machteld also posted an additional posting to this theme with some interesting pictures: Heraldic pouches continued
She also posted photos of the “Manesse pouch” she reproduced (if you remember my posting about the Manesse catalogue and the pouch: new book – Codex Manesse …lovely hairnets and alms pouch inside
Unfortunately it’s not possible to see if the pouch is worked in chain stitch, long arm cross stitch or “stem stitch worked in two rows diagonally put against each other, achieving an effect of chain stitch”… *sigh* – this are the stitches I would guess so far (including “versetzter gobelinstich”)

Finally I managed to have a look through the last photos taken at the “Kunsthistorisches Museum” on the last day of Kareinas stay here in Vienna.
I uploaded the best (704) photos – btw. you can find all (old & new) photos taken at the “Kunsthistorisches Museum” – in this Flickr folder: Austria, Vienna – KHM / Kunsthistorisches Museum.
…and here a really rather small selection of the photos taken at the “Kunsthistorisches Museum”:
